Spring hanging things

I heard on the radio that someone has decided that January 22 is mathmetically the most depressing day of the year due to lack of sunshine, mounting Christmas debt and the realization that New Years resolutions have come and gone unrealized. Here is the antidote: lovely hanging springlike things.

Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger's Falling Garden at the San Staë church on the Canale Grande gor the 50th Biennial of Venice in 2003. I love their story : The Doge (Mocenigo) needed a church so as to be able to have a monumental tomb built for himself, the church (San Staë) needed a saint so as to be able to be built, the saint (San Eustachio) needed a miracle so as to be pronounced a saint, the miracle needed a stag in order to be seen, and we built the garden for the reindeer. The visitors lie on the bed above the doge’s gravestone, and the garden thinks for them.

Lighting designer Stuart Haygarth's Tide chandelier from 2004. The mainly plastic peices were found washed up along the shoreline in Kent. The clear and translucent objects hang from monofilament.

Recent finds for today:

Atelier Lzc is a French design firm creating home goods from wallpaper to tea towels. Their vibrant overlapping patterns use bright colors and playful motifs. Highlights are the steel shapes and notebooks. A few of the tea towels, the steel flowers and birds are available from Rose and Radish.

Amy Sedaris has a few hilarious things for sale at Fred Flare right now. Who wouldn't want an Amy Sedaris fake cake Valentienes day? My sister gave me her I Like You, Hospitality Under the Influence book for Christmas and I have to say its very useful. A few recipes I haven't had time to try yet are in her Munchies section:

Amy grew up in my neighborhood and her brother (not David) runs a floor finishing business in Raleigh complete with Rooster trucks. His website also has a dont kill the rooster game and BBQ sauce. Only in North Carolina.

SANS a Frech fashion design company creating gorgeous draped clothing incorporating green design. Also heck out inhabitat for more contemporary green design. I found them when they featured k. talis in their green jewelry guide and they have proved to be a great resource.

The book is really great at showing the variety of mediums used in fashion illustration- many at the same time. Its not so much about the clothes. Another highlight is a self portrait of each artist represented in the back of the book.

Happy new year. I'm back in the studio this week sending out recent orders, restocking the office and putting together work for the Spring collection. I hope everyone had a great holiday- doing great things or not much of anything. I got a chance to slow down a little bit. I started Zadie Smith's On Beauty and some great books from Lark. Later this week I'll be adding a few new necklaces that made it through the Christmas season.

Thanks for a great year

I'll be closing up shop for the next week to spend time with family and friends, organize the studio and work on bookeeping. This has been a big year for k. talis thanks to all of you. The website went up, then the blog , then the shop. Somehow you found me in my little studio in North Carolina. Thanks for supporting me and my jewelry. I hope you have a great holiday and get to spend time with your friends and family this week. I'll be back in 2007 with a few new tricks. Cheers.

My furious elf-like jewelry making has come to a low boil for the rest of the year. Now I am wrapping, baking, sipping and loving my Fraser Fir. It reminds me of driving around Western North Carolina where sometimes all you can see are rolling hills and mountains dotted with thousands of trees just waiting for Christmas. Now I just have to decorate it.

Flickr is like a mini vacation. Just went back to Prague for a few minutes. Back to Christmas craziness.

I lied. I do have photos. The lovely Lindsey of Lindsey Marla Photography dropped off some images yesterday. These three pieces are all one of kind so scoop them up on Sunday.

This week has been a little insane. My studio and apartment look as though a jewelry tornado flew in. I have been getting all my ducks in a row and making a few new pieces for my holiday trunk show on Sunday at Vin. My camera has officially died so no preview pictures...you'll just have to stop by.

Looking for holiday baking recipes I came across the Cupcake Bake Shop. Lovely cupcake recipes and mouthwatering photos. Off to get a scone. Have a great weekend everyone. Hope to see you on Sunday.

Last minute update

This Sunday I will be participating in a Raleigh Christmas tradition: The Boylan Heights Art Walk. Their website has a list of artists as well as a printable map for wandering. Over 100 artists display and sell their work from porches, homes and studios. This is a wonderful opportunity to stroll through an historic neighborhood and shop for special gifts for the holidays. From 1 to 5 pm I will set up outside Rebus Works on Kinsey Street (its almost under the bridge) selling work from my collection. I just made a new batch of Morrison earrings that are the perfect holiday gift. They are $26 for small and $48 for the large. Don't forget to check out the Penland exhibit as Rebus. Penland definatley influenced my work and the postcard for the show is pretty fabulous.

Holidays at k. talis

Whew... it isn't even December yet and the holidays are getting to me. The making, wrapping, packaging, posting and shopping are in full effect here. I am ready for the parties, sweets, cooking and lounging about portion of the holiday season to begin.

I have been asked lately about the best way to get your hands on some k. talis goods. I just added some work from my most recent collection to my store. I will continue adding work over the next few days. All jewelry is gift wrapped and shipping in the US is complimentary so shopping online is painless. I tried going to the mall the other day..didn't quite make it in. It seems weird that Urban Outfitters is in suburban North Carolina. But I digress. If you would like to ship your purchase directly to its recipient just let me know and I can include a note.

If you are in the Raleigh area you another option. On Sunday December 10th from 4pm to 6pm my entire collection will be available for purchase at one of my favorite places in Raleigh, Enoteca Vin. Ornament fun

I just finished sewing and packing up my ornaments for the Holiday Ornament Swap. These were made with vintage chandelier crystals, enamel flowers and vintage leaves. Hung on silk and satin ribbon for the holidays but cut the ribbon off and hang it on a chain and you have yourself a pretty little necklace. Eight woman around the world will get their own unique ornament. I just sent mine off and received my first ornament in the mail today.

Odd place

I just took down the installation of my Fall collection in Goodman's Lady Shop and thought I would share a few snapshots. It was the fourth biannual HL show: HL odd place. I took these quickies last week so they are a little blurry but my friend Lindsey of Lindsey Marla photography took some great shots I'll post later. The mannequins in the installation were all in the store and were just moved around a little for the show. We kept the interior of the space as is and people seemed to really love being in such a unique space. The jewelry is inspired by the colors and details of the space, buttons, sewing odds and ends and vintage floral patterns. Enjoy!

2007 calendars

It is that time of year again. Shopping for everyone on your list can be a drag. But resist the urge to go to the mall. I've looked for the best handmade AND affordable gifts to give and get. First up are the calendars. They are fun because you can buy one for yourself too without feeling too greedy. I really like artists and designers are coming out with such great limited edition calandars now. You can retire the Cathy one from last year.


Thirteen prints held together with binder clips this color inkjet calendar is printed 4 x 4" on archival paper. From Bethany Designs. The prints are $18.


The two calendars above are from Limescreen. The limited edition seriagraph posters have two different images printed on 11 x 23.5" white cover stock. The calendars are on the bottom so at the end of the year chop them off and keep the print. At $10 each they are perfect for to hang in your office.

Letterpress is everywhere right now. The tactile quality of it is like nothing else. This limited edition calendar from ilee has a different letterpressed image for each month. It comes with a clear jewel case to sit on your desk but I think it would be nice on the wall. One year of deer and flower cuteness for $17.

Swedish artist Camilla Engman's offset printed and wire-bound calendar is a work of art. She also has very affordable prints available on her website. The calendar is 6.3 x 11.7 inches and $24.


Last but not least is San Fransisco ceramicist Diana Fayt's calendar. Offset printed in Japan on Japanese paper it has a hole at the top to hang on the wall. $28
